How do I get songs on my phone with a cable?

Ok i bought this cable thing for my at&t Phone, thinking i could take files from my computer and put em onto my phone. But i was wrong, so like does anyone know how or where i could use it to get FREE stuff like songs or clips onto my phone with it?? Thanks soo much.
