Decent sized screen
Good battery life
Reasonably strong screen and not too delicate a phone in general.
Good loud earpiece and loud ringtones.
All other things are a luxury. He doesn't want one of these "ultra-rugged" phones though or one of these "old people" phones. Just a standard high street mobile phone.
Cheers!
this looks good, not sure about screen size though but would be good choice i think

The mobile phone company claims its stripped-down, no-nonsense Jet handset lasts two-thirds longer than any comparable on sale device.
The simplified handset is aimed more at business users, but with more than 540 hours on standby and 9.9 hours of talk-time we know a few consumers who like to get their hands on one.
O2 boasts that Jet has more than double the talktime of the Nokia 6230i, the most popular device on its network.
The robust handset includes a special protective case and comes with a two year warranty.
The device offers quad-band connection, GPRS and supports Pop3 and IMAP4 email.
The O2 Jet is released on 19th October and its price will depend on the monthly tariff, although a pay as you go version costs £59.99.
I wouldn't choose Iphone and none of touch screen phones because them are not very useful. I'd rather take one of Nokia ones, because they are quite easy to use and some of them has large keys. And I think slide ones will be OK because they have large screens.

Apple iPhone - it has a huge screen, easy layout, no training needed really.
i would say the iphone but it has little small keys to type with . I dont know if the new blackberry has bigger keys.
iphone or any touch screen phone
iphone 3g
I would say the Samsung D900 is good in all of these except if you play music too much the battery goes down quite fast
d900
